Weathering Change Without Raising the Rent: Building Climate Resilience into Community Housing

November 18 @ 11:00 am - 12:15 pm

Climate resilience starts long before the next heat wave, flood, wildfire, or big storm – and it doesn’t end when the skies clear.

For community housing providers, preparing for climate change means keeping residents safe, particularly those most vulnerable to climate impacts. It can also mean finding ways to reduce emissions, protect buildings, and make homes more energy efficient without putting affordability at risk.

Four Regional Energy Coaches who work with the community housing sector will join us to explore how to move from good intentions to buildings that are ready for climate risks and what to consider when disaster strikes. We’ll be chatting about:

  • Preparing for Change: How retrofits and energy improvements can lower costs, reduce emissions, improve comfort, and prepare community housing for climate risks.
  • Keeping Residents Safe: What housing providers can do to protect residents, buildings, and operations when – and importantly, before – extreme weather hits.
  • (Re)Building Better: How recovery and rebuilding can be an opportunity to make homes safer and more resilient, rather than simply putting things back the way they were.
  • Keeping Housing Affordable: How to make climate and energy improvements without passing the cost to residents, and where funding and technical supports can help.
