Summary:
This report features key themes learned from four noteworthy retrofit projects in Alberta. It highlights the enabling conditions needed to build a strong retrofit sector, as well as support gaps that hold projects back.
The four case studies include a 4-storey apartment complex, a manufacturing warehouse, a large housing complex, and a downtown museum. Conversations with project leads highlight that a successful retrofit industry depends on a strong business case, financing, leadership, and timing.
Key findings:
- Retrofit success is a matter of being prepared when the moment for building changes comes (such as when equipment reaches end-of-life)Â
- Unsurprisingly, projects are more likely to move forward if there is a strong business case. Each of the case studies found creative ways to develop the business caseÂ
- Each project relied on key champions within the organization to move the retrofit project forwardÂ
- Whole-building retrofits are feasible, but the ecosystem is not ready for them to go mainstream. Supports that would help move projects into the mainstream include mortgage and insurance offerings, incentive programs, tax incentives, and cross-sectoral upskilling
