Alberta Context: Alberta is the only province in Canada without utility-led demand-side management (DSM) programs. This 4-minute video explains what demand-side energy resources are and how technologies, tools, and systems could work together as Alberta’s electricity system changes.
Summary:
Alberta’s electricity system was designed around centralized power plants that deliver electricity in one direction. However, technologies such as rooftop solar, EV charging infrastructure, batteries, and smart devices are being adopted in homes, buildings, and businesses across the local grid.
Using a transportation analogy, this video explains the tools and systems needed to support the technologies mentioned above. When these systems are designed well, distributed energy resources can work together to support the grid. Power can flow both to and from homes, buildings, and vehicles, creating a more flexible and coordinated system.
