Summary:
This short report highlights the Hi-Tech Seals building retrofit. Over two major renovations, Hi-Tech Seals has transformed its 32,000 square foot office and warehouse into a near net-zero facility. Upgrades include a geothermal loop with ground source heat pumps, a rooftop solar photovoltaic system, and upgrades to the building’s insulation.
Key findings:
- With the retrofit and disconnecting from natural gas lines, the building saves $1,100 per month in utility costs
- The project focused on building asset value, recognizing the importance of this for businesses that own buildings.
- Tax incentives were an important part of the business case.
This case study was developed as part of Pembina’s Surfacing Success initiative, intended to showcase various retrofit projects across Alberta and understand how to encourage and support similar projects. The Surfacing Success report synthesizes the lessons learned.
