Financial Tools and Incentives Supporting Deep Retrofits in Alberta

Author/Contributor: Alberta Ecotrust, ENBIX

Alberta Context: Using a hypothetical 20,000 sq. ft. mixed-use building in Edmonton, this case study explores financing, tax incentives, and grant programs applicable to commercial retrofit projects in Alberta.

Summary:

This report demonstrates how programs available to Alberta building owners can support retrofit projects. A detailed case study illustrates how financial tools such as Clean Energy Improvement Program (CEIP) financing, the Accelerated Investment Incentive (AII), and the Clean Technology Investment Tax Credit (CT ITC) can significantly improve project economics and support investment in deep retrofits.

The case study also considers the potential impact of direct grants for retrofit work through the Strategic Energy Management for Industry (SEMI) program. The SEMI program is fully subscribed and is placing new applications on a waitlist as of March 2026. Nonetheless, the report illustrates the impact this type of grant can have and shows how they may combine with other financial tools in some cases.
