Note, this course was previously planned to run October 20 – December 1, 2026. Due to unforeseen circumstances, it has been delayed by one week.
Apply whole-building design principles through an integrated design process to optimize commercial building performance, coordinating envelope, HVAC, electrical, lighting, and control systems to meet energy, comfort, and operational goals. Designed for builders, tradespeople in commercial construction, designers, and other industry professionals. This course assumes intermediate technical knowledge.
This course is self-guided, intended to be completed in approximately 15 hours between October 27 – December 8, 2026.The instructor, Azin Sanei, is a building performance consultant and LEED Accredited Professional in Building Design and Construction. Connect with Azin and other course participants through optional office hours via video conferencing.
At this time this course is being offered free of charge due to funding provided by RBC Foundation. Upon completion of the course, you will receive a recognition badge through Credly.
By the end of this course, you will be able to:
- Apply a whole-building lens to early design decisions on a commercial site, and identify who must be involved, and when, for those decisions to hold.
- Appraise the continuity of the control layers in an Alberta commercial envelope detail, and justify a fix where it breaks.
- Analyze how a commercial mechanical strategy matches heating, cooling, and ventilation to the building’s zones and occupancy, and justify a choice that keeps that match.
- Interpret an office demand profile, and recommend how to lower its peak so new loads fit within the service.
- Trace performance findings in an occupied commercial building to the decisions behind them, and propose what to ask at design stage to prevent them.
It is recommended you complete SNRG 009 High-Performance Building Fundamentals and SNRG 013 Technical Introduction to High-Performance Commercial Building Systems as prerequisites.
