Calgary’s Building Energy & Performance Datasets

Summary: 

This resource brings together five datasets tracking the energy, emissions, and cost performance of buildings across Calgary. The datasets cover existing commercial and institutional buildings through BenchmarkYYC, aggregated new-building energy code compliance submissions, completed Green Buildings Priority Stream projects, residential upgrades delivered through the Home Upgrades Program, and projects completed through the residential Clean Energy Improvement Program (CEIP).

Together, the datasets cover parts of Calgary’s existing building stock and new construction, including commercial, institutional, multi-residential, and single-family residential buildings. The Existing Buildings dataset summarizes reported energy, water, and greenhouse gas (GHG) information by year and property type. The New Buildings dataset summarizes information from building energy code submissions and compares proposed designs with standard reference buildings. The Green Buildings Priority Stream Constructed Building Performance dataset provides project-level information for completed buildings participating in GBPS, including modelled energy, greenhouse gas, and energy cost performance based on permit-stage documentation. The Home Upgrades Program dataset includes completed residential retrofits and estimated energy, GHG, and cost savings. The CEIP dataset tracks completed upgrades to single-family detached homes, including financing, incentives, and solar photovoltaic outcomes where applicable.

Together, these datasets provide insight into how participating segments of Calgary’s building sector are performing and changing over time. Building owners, researchers, developers, consultants, and policymakers can use the information to identify trends and better understand building energy and emissions outcomes in Calgary.

Note: Use caution when interpreting the data because not every metric is available for every project, and the datasets do not represent all buildings in Calgary. Comparisons should therefore be treated as illustrative rather than definitive. Even with these limitations, the datasets provide a useful public snapshot of outcomes The City can track as more high-performance buildings are delivered.
