City of Calgary Part 9 Performance Path Study:
Single detached houses: Energy performance and breakdown of energy tier
- Energy Tiers: The majority of homes (52%) exceed the minimum Tier 1, code-level energy compliance. Only a very small number of Tier 4 & 5 were observed.
Row Houses: Energy performance and breakdown of energy tier
- Energy Tiers: This is a small sample size. Exactly half of the units are better than the code minimum. These above-code-minimum units met both performance Tier 2 and Tier 3.
Semi-detached houses: Energy performance and breakdown of energy tier
- Energy Tiers: Most semi-detached dwellings are at Tier 1 (57%). The remainder (43%) meet tier 2 and tier 3.
For all archetypes
The building envelope does not appear to affect Tier achievement in the lower Tiers. Improvements in energy efficiency primarily stemmed from active systems such as HRVs, higher-efficiency furnaces, and domestic hot water systems, which accounted for most of the Tiered energy savings. Minor savings also came from better roof insulation and lower window U-values. The mean effective R-values of the walls remained below reference values in the lower Tiers, and there was no improvement in air tightness.
