SUMMARY:Earth Tubes\, On Site Monitoring and Costing Results
DESCRIPTION:This presentation will be similar to the Passive House Canada (PHC) Pulse talk\, with the addition of cost analysis for the electric preheat option. It will include on-site monitoring results and evaluate earth tubes against electric resistance heat.  Using measured energy use and typical electricity rates\, the presentation will look at annual operating costs and a simple payback to understand how many years it takes for the earth tube system to become cost-effective. The presentation will also highlight the free cooling aspect of earth tubes\, which may be where they provide the most value.

DESCRIPTION:Using Alberta-based Part 9 residential case studies\, this session explores low embodied carbon building assemblies that remain cost-effective compared to industry standards. Attendees will learn how to balance building science and resiliency with decarbonization goals. Using the MCE2 software extension for Hot2000\, we quantify the “cradle-to-gate” emissions of specific assemblies and full-scale projects. We will also discuss the practical trade-offs between fire resistance\, wind loads\, and durability\, providing clear justifications for material selection in high-performance builds.
