Joseph Henke\, Program Manager at ENBIX – Alberta Ecotrust\, will uncover new data showing real permit tier levels and typical design inputs for recent Part 3 performance path permits in Calgary. \nAs industry navigates the shift towards emissions-neutral buildings\, ENBIX seeks to understand boots-on-the-ground experience. Following a concise data briefing\, expect a facilitated group discussion to gather feedback\, challenges and insights. This isn’t just another presentation–it’s a collaborative knowledge exchange designed to unlock practical\, industry-led action. \nWho Should Attend: This event is open to anyone in the building and construction industry in Calgary\, including general contractors (GCs)\, developers\, and members of the Calgary Construction Association. \nDetails: \nAlberta Ecotrust compiled performance path data from Part 3 and Part 9 buildings in Calgary\, Edmonton and Canmore to assess the current state of building energy performance in those municipalities.  \nThis data focuses on the performance path and shows Tier levels from permitting data along with typical design inputs. This research asks questions such as: \n\nWhat strategies are builders currently using to achieve building performance targets? \nWhat individual building components are being used to achieve performance in a cost-effective manner?\nHow does Part 3 compare to Part 9 in terms of meeting or exceeding performance targets\, and why? \nPerformance path is the dominant submission path in Alberta. How does performance path compare to prescriptive path in using cost-optimized solutions to achieve energy performance targets?\nHow do different municipalities’ building performance compare\, and why?\n\nAs with any data set\, there are limitations. Industry can provide insight into future questions that ENBIX can answer through future research.

SUMMARY:Building Technology Series: Solar Thermal Heating in Alberta
DESCRIPTION:Join ENBIX and SSRIA for a deep dive into the latest advancements in solar thermal heating technology.  Three presentations will explore:  \n\nThe state of solar thermal heating in Canada \nThe latest in commercial solar thermal air heating \nA real example of advanced solar PVT – thermal hybrid systems operating in Alberta including the integration of thermal storage in a residential setting.   \n\nSolar thermal heating is often associated only with pool heaters\, considered an ‘old’ technology but there has been ongoing advancements both globally and in Canada. While not typically associated with cold climates\, new approaches such as solar thermal air heating and hybrid PV-thermal collectors are being used.  Solar thermal is no longer just about heating hot water and Canada has emerged as a global leader in solar thermal air heating.  Alberta has remarkable solar resources\, this has been reflected in an explosion of solar for electricity but solar thermal remains a niche\, even though building heat accounts for the majority of our energy use. The technology is a significant new frontier in reducing building emissions.   \nThis expert panel\, with nearly 100 years of collective experience on renewable energy systems\, will give context on the state of solar thermal applications across Canada\, examples of Canadian leadership\, and new approaches for heat and electricity. The topics covered will be applicable to commercial\, residential\, and institutional buildings.     \nEach panelist will give a short presentation\, there will be an audience Q&A session. \nPanelists\nDr. Lucio Mesquita is a Senior Research Engineer at CanmetENERGY-Ottawa\, the chair of International Energy Agency Solar Heating and Cooling Technical Collaboration Programme. He has over 30 years of experience in the research\, design\, and testing of solar thermal and thermal storage products and systems for heating and cooling applications in several countries including Canada\, Brazil\, China\, and the United States. He holds a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from Queen’s University (Canada) and a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the Federal University of Minas Gerais (Brazil) \nLowy Gunnewik is a professional engineer whose career has exposed him to a wide variety of industries and markets while working in roles from process engineering to leading companies and boards. In his work\, Lowy has continually focused on how we can decarbonize our energy systems and improve the efficiency and effectiveness of how we use energy. Lowy’s experience with SolarWall Systems began about 35 years ago while completing his research thesis investigating the performance of transpired-plate solar collectors operating in real world conditions\, ultimately supporting the commercialization of the technology. Today\, Lowy works with building owners and managers as they search for ways to reduce heating costs and improve environmental conditions with improved ventilation by incorporating SolarWall Systems into their buildings. \nJames Bereton is a professional engineer in Alberta.  With 10 years of experience in control systems\, James has spent the last 28 years working on renewable energy and leading edge low carbon energy systems.  This energy modeling for complex systems including solar\, geothermal\, and thermal storage.  As founder and CEO of Eta Energy Solutions they are focused on renewable and energy efficiency solutions that deliver economically viable low carbon solutions for  tomorrow’s zero carbon future. \n

SUMMARY:Material Carbon Emissions Estimator (MCE2) Training
DESCRIPTION:The Alberta Ecotrust Getting to Zero Research Project is working with the industry to reduce emissions by turning real-world data from low or zero-emissions buildings into insights that can be applied across Alberta.  As part of this research project\, Alberta Ecotrust and NRCan are offering MCE2 training to those who require training in Material Carbon Emissions Estimators. Cooper Le of 4 Elements Integrated Design will deliver the workshop. \nMCE2 is designed for Canada’s home building industry. It quantifies the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions associated with specific low-rise\, residential building designs by providing two important estimates: \n\nThe GHG emissions associated with manufacturing required building materials\nThe estimated GHG emissions from operating the home (calculated using results from a HOT2000 energy model)\n\nTogether\, these results predict the overall GHG impact of a new home or renovation (its carbon use intensity\, or CUI) and provide industry with insights into reduction opportunities. \nAt the end of this workshop\, you will be able to: \n\nDescribe the difference between operational carbon emissions and material carbon emissions for residential buildings and the relationship between the two.\nUnderstand the similarities and differences between an Energy Advisor’s typical scope of work and MCE2 modelling\nComplete a MCE2 modelling example\nDiscuss how to interpret results\, limitations\, and the assumptions in the calculations\n\nMCE2 Training Dates: \n\nSeptember 28th 1:00 PM – 3:30 PM MST & September 29th 1:00 PM – 3:30 MST\n\n* Spots are limited\, and priority will be given to participants who currently work on projects in Alberta. SUMMARY:Design Considerations for High-Performance Residential Buildings
DESCRIPTION:Apply integrated design principles to balance envelope\, mechanical\, and electrical systems in residential projects. Learn to sequence design decisions and select assemblies appropriate to Alberta’s climate in order to meet defined performance goals. This course is the third in SAIT’s high-performance building series. High-Performance Building Fundamentals and Technical Introduction to High-Performance Residential Buildings are both prerequisites. \nThis course is self-guided\, intended to be completed in approximately 15 hours between October 27 – December 8\, 2026. There will be live online class sessions during this period that will be recorded if you are not able to attend live. \nAt this time this course is being offered free of charge due to funding provided by Natural Resources Canada’s Codes Acceleration Fund. Upon completion of the course\, you will receive a recognition badge through Credly. \nBy the end of this course\, you will be able to: \n\nDesign a residential building as an integrated system and demonstrate how envelope mechanical\, and electrical decisions interact to achieve performance targets.\nApply the Integrated Design Process (IDP) to sequence design decisions across envelope\, mechanical\, and electrical systems to anticipate downstream implications.\nSelect envelope assemblies\, mechanical systems\, and electrification strategies that align with Alberta’s climate and regulatory context.\nNavigate Alberta energy code compliance pathways and use energy modelling to validate and refine design decisions.\nDevelop high-performance design recommendations that prioritize performance investments within budget constraints and position the home for future net-zero upgrades.
