SUMMARY:Technical Introduction to High-Performance Residential Building Systems
DESCRIPTION:High-performance homes don’t happen by accident. They are the result of systems working together – envelope\, mechanical\, electrical – designed with intention from the start. This course takes you inside those systems\, giving you the technical grounding to understand how high-performance residential buildings actually perform. Intended for builders\, designers\, and other construction professionals\, this course builds on industry experience to introduce the key systems and strategies behind high-performance residential construction. \nThis course is self-guided\, intended to be completed in approximately six hours between June 16-30\, 2026. Connect with the instructor\, Steve Norris\, and other course participants through optional office hours via video conferencing on June 18 and June 25\, 3:00 – 4:00 p.m. \nAt this time this course is being offered free of charge due to funding provided by Natural Resources Canada’s Codes Acceleration Fund. Upon completion of the course\, you will receive a recognition badge through Credly. \nBy the end of this course\, you will be able to: \n\nRecognize house-as-a-system concepts in residential design and construction\nExplain how each of the four building envelope control layers influences energy performance\nExplain how HVAC systems function as an integrated mechanical system in high-performance homes\nExplain the role of electrification in high-performance homes\nExplain the role of energy modeling in the design of high-performance homes\n\nIt is recommended you complete SNRG 009 High-Performance Building Fundamentals as a prerequisite (offered May 26 – June 9\, 2026).

DESCRIPTION:Photo credit: George Webber \nThe Deep Retrofit Discovery Sessions are a series of free public information sessions to help address deep energy retrofits of large\, part 3 buildings in Alberta. Located in the heart of downtown Calgary\, the Glenbow is targeting a 2027 reopening in its revitalized home\, the JR Shaw Centre for Arts & Culture. \nWorking with project partners\, Glenbow has considered future climate-related risks\, integrated energy savings\, and greenhouse gas reductions measures into the building’s design to improve long term resilience and performance. Take a peak behind the curtain to learn all about Glenbow’s deep energy retrofit\, including a new building envelope and modernized mechanical systems. These upgrades target 38% reduction in annual energy use and 41% reduction in greenhouse gas reductions. Read more about the retrofit here. \nSAIT and Alberta Ecotrust\, along with experts from DIALOG\, RJC Engineers\, Entuitive\, and Smith + Andersen\, will co-host this information session and tour. \nSpace is limited to 15 attendees. If the event is full\, please add yourself to the waitlist. The information session will be recorded and published to the ENBIX resource library after the event for those that are unable to make it in person. \nNote\, as this site is still under active construction\, attendees will be required to sign a waiver in order to participate. This project works with the industry to turn real-world data from low or zero-emissions buildings into practical insights that can be applied across Alberta. \nWe are working with designers\, builders\, consultants\, contractors\, developers and homebuilders of Part 9 residential buildings across Alberta to gather and purchase data from their low or zero-emissions projects. The project includes three participation streams\, with payments of up to $8\,000\, $10\,000 and $25\,000 available for data collection.
