Alberta Ecotrust Foundation is expanding its Emissions-Neutral Buildings Information Exchange (ENBIX) initiative with $1.4 million in funding from Natural Resources Canada’s (NRCan) Codes Acceleration Fund.
This expansion brings ENBIX’s resources and support to smaller urban centers and rural communities across Alberta, empowering these areas to reduce building-related emissions. This marks a significant step in Alberta Ecotrust’s ongoing mission to drive sustainable building practices across the province.
ENBIX is a collaborative initiative that brings the building industry together to share knowledge, build capacity, and support energy-efficient building and renovation practices across Alberta. The goal of ENBIX is to reduce emissions from new and existing buildings across Alberta.Â
Nearly half of Alberta’s population (49%) lives outside of Edmonton and Calgary, spread across both large and small urban centers as well as rural communities. The built environment in these communities contributes to carbon emissions, just like buildings in major cities. This recent funding will allow ENBIX to broaden its reach beyond the current focus areas of Edmonton and Calgary, creating forums for the building industry to collaborate, share insights, and develop the skills necessary to support sustainable building practices across Alberta.
With this funding, ENBIX aims to:
- Assess energy code compliance: Examine existing residential and commercial building permit applications to determine the current level of energy code being achieved and to understand building energy performance across the province.
- Support municipalities: Develop a toolkit for municipalities to help safety code officers in reviewing building permits for compliance with energy codes.Â
- Develop local resources: Create tailored resources and case studies specific to small urban centers and rural communities outside Edmonton and Calgary.
- Address training gaps: Identify gaps in existing training programs to promote the adoption of high-performance, emissions-neutral construction practices.
- Enhance curriculum and regional training: Work with post-secondary institutions throughout Alberta to strengthen curriculum and deliver regional training.
- Facilitate industry events and networking: Continue hosting and promoting events across Alberta, both online and in-person, to foster networking opportunities and collaboration within the building industry.
