National Whole-building Life Cycle Assessment Guidelines

Author/Contributor: NRCan

Alberta Context: These guidelines, designed for nationwide application in Canada, serve as the National Guidelines for Life Cycle Assessments and are applicable to projects in Alberta, both rural and urban.

Summary:

These two documents from NRCan offer guidance for the practice of life cycle assessments (LCA) for buildings, adhering to relevant standards. Their goal is to help standardize whole-building life cycle assessments (wbLCA) across different studies by improving consistency and quality.  The guidelines can assist with interpretation and compliance with relevant standards. The documents aim to:

  • Instruct wbLCA practitioners to ensure the quality and comparability of their results,
  • Enable the calculation of reliable baselines or benchmarks,
  • Support LCA-based compliance schemes in green building programs and policies,
  • Assist in the development and use of wbLCA software.

There are two guidelines, the National guidelines for whole-building life cycle assessment and the National whole-building life cycle assessment practitioner’s guide.  If you practice life cycle assessments on buildings, these guides contain some wonderful information to help.
