Decarbonizing Canada’s Commercial Buildings: The Owner & Investor Perspective Report

Alberta Context:  This report gathers information from the Canadian commercial real estate industry on the barriers to decarbonizing buildings. It was written for owners and investors across Canada but applies to Alberta, both rural and urban. 

Summary: 

Based on interviews, surveys, and roundtable discussions with a large group of Canadian building owners and investors, this report identifies six key barriers to building decarbonization in Canada in 2024. The report succinctly lays out ten recommendations for action to address these barriers, including actions for industry and all levels of government. By working together with building owners and investors to understand their barriers, the authoring organizations present this report as a “viable implementation plan” for the decarbonization of buildings and portfolios across Canada. The report is particularly relevant to the commercial real estate industry and is relevant to anyone working on deep retrofits and building decarbonization in Alberta.
